Boston Terrier Dog Breed Information

The Boston Terrier was recognized as a breed by the AKC in 1893.

“The American Gentleman”

The breed is nicknamed for their manners.   They’re cute, sweet, affectionate, cuddly, and so playful!

Historically, Boston Terriers were a working breed. In the early 19th century, Bostons worked in clothing and garment factories. “Ratting” out the mice with their quick reflexes.

With an average weight up to 25lbs. The  Boston Terrier is a small and compact dog. With a muscular and sturdy frame.

Boston Terriers make GREAT companions!

They’re super adaptable dogs. Whether it’s inside watching Hallmark Movies, a full-blown outside adventure. A Boston Terrier is open for whatever the day brings.

If they could talk, they’d probably say something like;

“Let’s spend the whole day together! As long as I’m with you!”

Meet Java and Jemma

Their personalities are fire and water.

Hiking With a Boston Terrier

Just like people, dogs need to “train”. They must “get used to” hiking. If it’s your first time hiking, your loyal companion will be with you every step of the way!

Start Small

As you embark into the woods; be sure to pack and plan accordingly. Be sure trails are dog-friendly. When traveling, be sure restaurants and accommodations allow dogs. You will need to pack for your pup, too!

Plan Ahead

Boston Terriers are known for their thin coat. Their fur, or lack thereof; keeps them cool. However, the nose knows! With their smushy snouts; it’s important to keep a close eye on their breathing, which can lead to overheating.

Stop for a rest, take water breaks, and be mindful.

Safeguarding your Boston Terrier from Extreme Heat and Cold

Do Boston Terriers like Hiking?
Short Answer: YES!
(Hocking Hills, OH)

Java and Jemma understand “DO YOU WANNA GO ON A HIKE?!”… They get so excited!

They enjoy the car ride, they enjoy the new scenery, and all the beauty from above.

However, it takes some planning. We love bringing the girls when it’s ideal.

What’s ideal?

Hiking with a Boston Terrier; temperatures between 50° and 70° is ideal. 45°  may be too cold. 75°  can be too warm. Some trails are not ideal. Wide-Open fields and Lake-Trails are not recommended in the heat. Stick to the shade and stay in the woods; they’ll appreciate that!

How many Miles can a Boston Terrier Hike?

Like I said before; they must “get used to” hiking! Depending on their age and activity level; Start Small and Plan Ahead. When we began hiking; our girls began hiking too. Together we’ve “gotten used to it”. We’ve done twenty minute hikes, and we’ve done five mile hikes!

Everything you need to know..

No matter the breed; Great Dane or Chihuahua. Mega-FLOOF or thin-coat. All shapes and sizes; I love dogs! Maybe more than people.. and I really love people, too. But, there’s just something special about dogs. We ALL can learn so much from their loyalty, enthusiasm, and unconditional love .

Dogs.. My favorite thing!

Step by Step; Hiking is pretty simple. One foot, in front of the other. Planning and doing. Climbing and reaching. Giving and receiving.

It takes Effort.

Nurture in Nature

Get out and enjoy the day!
