The Old Way vs. the Better Way
How Life in America Has Changed Over the Decades
Learning from Generational Perspectives
People are evolving. Our society is getting larger. The times are a’changing.
Food has evolved.
There’s a new flavor of Kit Kat every few months.
I mean, what will “they” think of next?
I’m not “old”. But, I have to admit the truth. As a millennial; I’m middle-aged.
I can remember things being different.
The generation before me; I’m sure they can recall things in a different perspective too.
It’s like the food stores have gotten so large; and there are so many things to pick from. Like candy for example:
How many flavors of candy exists in 2024?
How about 1994?
How about 1954?
Today we have like 20 varieties of Reeses, Skittles in gummies, even a high protein Snickers bar, YouTube celebrity candies, TikTok challenge candies, a new Kit Kat flavor every few months.. I could go on for days!
In the 90’s; I can remember certain candy. The nostalgia hits when I think of chicklets. There was grape bubble gum. Reese’s cups, Reese’s pieces. Milky Way. Snickers. 3 Musketeers. For the most part; all of today’s “basics” existed.
In the 50’s? Well, that’s way before my time. In the movies; it looks pretty simple. Jars of candy and it was a penny!
Let’s dig a little bit deeper.
Let’s go way back.
Into the 1800’s.

Basically “100 years ago” (because the 90’s was 10 years ago, amirite?) the world functioned differently.
The typical American family has changed. Think about Laura Ingalls. The Longest Winter was a hard read. But, goodness! They made it through and got by!
These days; if I need it– Hop into my car, drive to the store, and go get it!
Wait.. That’s the 1990s.
It’s 2024.. I don’t even have to hop up! I can order it from my phone. Door Dash can be here in 20 minutes! And, I don’t have to see anyone!
Life was so much different.
Technology wasn’t around yet. The digital age was completely unheard of. Food was hunted, grown, and traded.
The world functioned differently.
Our society had a different functioning.
Looking back; nothing has changed.
We’re born. We live. We die.
Yet.
It’s so different.
The living part.
The day-to-day LIFE part.
The world around us changed.
Opportunities came.
Society equipped themselves with new missions.
In the land of opportunity; you’re free to choose.
The vision of a “better way” came; the old way became forgotten.
Looking forward; nothing is changing.
We’re born. We live. We die.
Except now we’re living “a better way”.
Everything is so convenient. Indoor plumbing. Refrigerators. Televisions. Smart phones. Cars. The list goes on.
This day and age; we’ve got it so easy! Modern technology is amazing!
The crazy truth is – humankind existed WITHOUT this stuff since the beginning of time.
These “basic necessities” have only popped up in the last 100 years or so.
The “better way” path led to the easy-and-convenient lifestyle we enjoy today.
Yet it’s so complicated.
Most of us feel confined to a “box”… and we’re checking off boxes.
The to-do list is never ending. And new things pop up on our bucket list..
Conventional thinking is what got us here. Money makes the world go ‘round. Right?

We were concepted and created the same way as our ancestors. Our bodies and minds are the same. We’re all red-blooded, air breathing, soul-feeling humans.
We are simply not created for the hustle and bustle that comes with today’s times. The consumerism/capitalism/hustle-ism. The 9-to-5 desk job. Climbing and chasing our way to “success”.
Our bodies were made to move.
We were meant to eat from the ground.
The purpose of life is to give, nurture, and love.
No amount of money will buy happiness.
How are you living?
What are you doing to function?
What is your mission?
Do you know your purpose?
The old way may seem “simple” or “unconventional”. Life is not a box. Our lives are not a to-do list with things to cross off.

I’m all for going back to my roots. Back to the beginning. Pioneer my way through life.
May the brightness of “the way” shine through your path in life. Illuminate your inner light; be who you were created to be.
