A Way to Spend the Day!
Planning the Adventure
You take the High Road
Heading North on Route 20 from Pipestem State Park and Bluestone State Park; Sandstone Falls was the next stop on our iternary on the Coalfields Waterfalls Roadtrip.

I’ll take the Low Road
As you come onto the bridge to Hinton, WV; you can continue on the high road. New River Road is the low road; the scenic route. It runs right along side the rapids of New River.
Arriving the Destination
The Sandstone Falls Boardwalk is a bit off the beaten path. Eight miles down New River Road. And eight miles back up.. BUT, let me plead with you. It is well worth the tedious extra driving.

The Boardwalk Trail/Island Loop provides many views of the New River. There’s so many bridges, decks, shores, and rock formations. So many ways to access the namesake; Sandstone Falls.

You could spend hours here meandering the shores. Exploring. Looking. Finding.
“She Sells Sea Shells”

Arriving to Hinton, WV (10/22/2024); Almost a month after Hurricane Helene made landfall. We noticed how high the river was. There was still evidence of flooding around the banks and trees.
The Falls at Sandstone were much more powerful than the other waterfalls we saw. The power came from a different source; North Carolina.
Is Sandstone good for kids?
Children will love exploring the shores of Sandstone! Many rocks to climb. Beaches to comb. However, due to strong currents; please keep close watch on kids and dogs.
Is Sandstone good for dogs?
Yes! We saw several dogs at Sandstone. They seemed like they were enjoying the day on the Boardwalk. A great place for everyone!
Is Sandstone handicap accessible?
Absolutely! The Boardwalk features a wide path. Plenty of great views all around! However, it’s crowded. Everyone wants to get a peak at these beautiful falls.
Can you swim at Sandstone Falls?
Actually, yes! Swimming is permitted. However, due to raging currents; Take Care, be responsible and wear a life jacket!
