In Western PA, things are a little different. Heck, in West Virginia things are a little different.

The little differences is what makes culture and local traditions so interesting..
In Western PA, you’ll find PACKED OUT fire halls, churches, and “granges” every Friday between February and April. Let’s dive into this local tradition…
The Western Pennsylvania Fish Fry Tradition
Way, way back in colonial times. Anti-Catholic laws were put into place. Catholics could not vote, hold office, or forbidden to buy land.
Pennsylvania was different. It was the Quaker Province. William Penn was granted the territory in 1681.
“There may be room there for such a Holy Experiment. For the Nations want a precedent and my God will Make it the Seed of a Nation. That an example may be set up to the Nations. That we may do the thing that is truly wise and just.”
-William Penn

Why fish fries are a big deal in Western PA?
I’m a life-long West Virginia native. I never knew about Western Pennsylvania Fish Fry Culture until I was in my twenties.
In my twenties, I began working for big pharm out of Pittsburgh. I was a medical courier. Delivering to every corner and coal town of Washington and Greene County.
McDonald, Burgettstown, Avella, Claysville, Washington, Cannonsburg, Eighty-Four, Bentleyville, Charleroi, Marianna, Carmichaels, Jefferson, Mather, Waynesburg, Prosperity, Graysville, Wind Ridge, Allepo, New Freeport, Brave, Mt. Morris, Bobtown

Somewhere right-between Greene and Washington County is Prosperity, PA. Out in the middle of nowhere. No cell service, and beautiful as ever. Ten Mile church would have a line of cars up the hill every Friday.. With a big sign:
“FISH FRY TODAY”.
Around this time of the year; Throughout the day, moving from one coal town to the next. I’d see fire departments, churches, and “granges” (community buildings) PACKED OUT with cars for “FISH FRY TODAY”. It was odd to see so many people gathered together in such rural places.
More than just a meal,
It’s a gathering..
It’s a way of life that I never knew about! In my deliveries, folks would mention their plans for the day. Plans to “go down to the fire hall later”. Or they’d recommend I try the one in Prosperity.

Yet.. In all these years of experiencing the culture. I never tried it for myself. Work got in the way of taking a break.
Why doesn’t West Virginia have Fish Fry Culture?
I was born and raised in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. Which is vastly different than Southern West Virginia. In the Eastern Panhandle; Orchards and farming is a way of life. In the south; the livelihood is coal.

Virginia was predominantly Episcopalian. The Virginia Statute for Establishing Religious Freedom was passed in 1786. Before that, all citizens were taxed to support the church. If they didn’t pay, there would be penalties.
West Virginia became a state in 1863. Methodist was the most popular religion. Methodist pastors would ride horses in the circuit, reaching folks up the hills and hollers.
Preston County’s early settlers faced high land costs and few religious leaders
Present-Day West Virginia: There’s very few catholic churches. Only 8% of West Virginians are catholic. At one point in time, during the construction of the National Railroad: Western Virginia was considered an “unorganized spiritual wilderness.”
